IP waterproof rating explained for Aftershokz waterproof headphones

    Shokz Jan 07

We get a lot of questions about the IP waterproof rating of our AfterShokz headphones. When buying new headphones you want to know what you can do with them. Are AfterShokz Aeropex shower proof? Can you swim with AfterShokz Xtrainerz? You'll find all the answers here! We'll explain which IP rating is waterproof and how to interpret these international standards when choosing headphones.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN WATER RESISTANT AND WATERPROOF HEADPHONES?

If a product is labelled as water resistant it is able to resist the penetration of water only to a certain point. Water resistant products are normally coated with a light substance to prevent splashes, rain or sweat getting in.

If a product is waterproof it can be immersed in water - up to a certain point but it doesn't mean it will be impervious to water for all depths and durations.

The Entering Rating scale (or IP Code) measures how effective a product is at keeping water out.

WHAT IS THE IP WATERPROOF RATING?

The IP Code (International Protection Rating or Ingress Protection Rating) is classified as the degree of protection provided against dust and water in electrical products. Basically that means, how good is the product at keeping water and dust out.

How do we understand the IP rating for headphones?

    1. First Digit

The first digit indicates the level of protection that the enclosure of the headphones provides against access to solid foreign bodies, such as particles of dust. The digits range from 0 to 6 and will indicate the foreign object size the product is protected against. 0 means no protection and 6 means dust tight.

You may notice that some AfterShokz Bluetooth headphones are marked as “IPX7”. Here, “X” is not the same as “0”, it means there is no data available to specify a protection rating with regard to this criteria.

    2. Second Digit

The second digit indicates the level of protection against water entering the headphones. The digits range from 0 to 8 and will indicate if the product is protected from dripping water, splashing water, and/or immersion at different depths. 0 meaning no protection and 8 meaning protection from permanent submersion in water.
