Do your ears hurt after wearing headphones? Ear pain can be an annoying distraction when you want to listen to music, an audiobook, or even a podcast. It can also be a sign of a more serious problem, such as an infection.
This guide will explain the most likely reasons you experience ear pain from headphones. We will also reveal how to resolve these issues, including the maximum volume you should use and what headphones you can use to minimize your pain.
Read on to discover the advice that will help preserve your hearing in the long term.
Why Do Headphones Cause Ear Pain?
Headphones can hurt your ears in various ways because they apply pressure on the cartilage and trap air. This can negatively affect your ears and its different processes, including ear wax removal.
Yet the type of headphones you use will also affect how and whether you experience ear pain.
Common Causes of Ear Pain from Headphones
Most commonly, the pressure from the band of the headphones causes pain. This usually happens when you use a pair of headphones that are too tight for your head, so the ear cups strain the cartilage of your ears.
Alternatively, the pressure could be in your ears. This is more likely to happen if you wear earbuds that need to fit in your ear canal.
In either case, wearing headphones for an excessively long period will cause muscle strain and pain, which will only worsen if the headphones are heavy.
Signs That Your Headphones Are Causing Ear Pain
In some cases, it can be difficult to assess whether your ear pain is from headphones. For instance, pain at the back of the ear is also a symptom of poor posture.
You should look for a combination of the following symptoms to isolate your headphones as the cause of your pain:
-
Soreness in and around the ear
-
Frequent ear infections
-
Headaches
-
Excessive ear wax
-
Sensitive ear canal
-
Ear acne
If you stop using your headphones and notice that these symptoms disappear along with the pain, then the headphones are most likely at fault.
How Long-Term Headphone Use Affects Ear Health
Wearing headphones for prolonged periods can be detrimental to your ear health. To start with, headphones increase the risk of infections by trapping the moisture in the ear and stopping the natural flow of ear wax.
In addition, headphones can cause hearing strain, which is the overworking of the auditory system. This may occur when listening for too long or at too high a volume.
Likewise, setting your headphones at a very loud volume may cause noise sensitivity, which leads to normal sounds appearing louder than normal.
How to Prevent Ear Pain from Headphones
Your hearing will only deteriorate with time, so it is essential that you preserve it as much as possible.
The following tips can help you prevent ear pain caused by headphones:
Choosing the Right Headphones
There are various types of headphones; you can divide them based on how or whether they cover your ear. Since pressure can cause ear pain from headphones, you must avoid the types of headphones that put pressure on the ear cartilage and ear canal.
Like the over-ear and in-ear models do, respectively, instead, you should consider the open-ear headphones as they are the most comfortable. This is because they rest above the ear and do not enter the ear, alleviating ear canal pain.
Adjusting Headphone Fit for Comfort
The fit of your headphones can also affect your comfort. Therefore, you will need to opt for headphones with adjustable headbands or with a headband that fits you.
Whenever you wear your headphones, you should ensure that they are in the correct setting so they do not clamp with excessive force.
You can further ease soreness by adding soft and comfortable ear pads.
Limiting Headphone Usage
Lastly, you should take breaks and avoid listening to music loudly for a long time to prevent ear pain. According to experts, you should limit your volume to 85 dB for 8 hours a day.
You should halve that time for every additional 3 dB. Therefore, at 91 dB, you can only safely listen for 2 hours. Beyond these time frames, you will likely feel a strain and permanently damage your hearing.
Why Open-Ear Headphones Are a Healthier Alternative
When you want to avoid ear pain from headphones, open earphones are the best option for you. These earphones do not cover or enter your ear.
Instead, they emit sound through the air and your skull, using air and bone conduction technology.
The Benefits of Open-Ear Headphones for Reducing Ear Pain
Open-earphone models can eliminate ear pain caused by pressure in your ear canal or cartilage since they do not put pressure there.
In addition, the fact that they do not cover the ear means that the ear canal has normal airflow, preventing heat built-up, which would be uncomfortable.
Preventing Bacteria and Moisture Build-Up
Open earphones make infections less likely because of the increased air circulation.
When air is circulating in your ear canal, the moisture levels are reduced, minimizing the risk of infection.
This is because ear infections are more frequent when you have a moist and warm environment in your ear.
