Here's a look at the engineering behind that 7.2g benchmark — and how it translates into all-day comfort.
Why make them lighter?
For open-ear earbuds, the difference between a pair you wear for an hour and a pair you wear all day comes down to one thing: comfort. And comfort's greatest physical enemy is weight.
Every extra gram makes the earbuds move more and increases the downward pull as you go about your day. That's why lightweight design became the guiding principle behind OpenFit Air 2, with a strict target of just 7.2g per ear. The goal wasn't simply to create the lightest earbuds in Shokz's open-ear lineup, but to do so while preserving flagship-level sound and a secure fit.
In a mature earbud design, even 1g is a significant reduction. Every gram removed affects weight distribution, acoustics, and the overall structure.
Facing a challenge that seemed to push beyond conventional limits, our R&D team rebuilt the earbuds from the ground up — from the driver to the housing to the frame.
How did we make them this light?
1. The starting point: an ambitious mandate
Our goal was simple: build ear-hook earbuds lighter than anything we'd created before, without compromising comfort or sound.
Based on early user research, the team set an ambitious target: reduce weight by at least 1g per ear while preserving powerful open-ear audio. The lighter, the better. In a mature design, 1g is a huge leap. Every gram influences balance, acoustics, and structural integrity.
2. Breaking the deadlock: a geometric rebuild — and one counterintuitive addition

Over nearly a year, through five major design iterations and more than 150 rounds of refinement, the team worked with micron-level precision.
To achieve an ultra-compact form factor, they integrated core components into the front housing. That introduced two major challenges: excess front-end weight that caused ear droop, and an extremely limited acoustic chamber. Rather than compromise, the team redesigned every layer — driver, housing, and frame.
① Slimming the front end: custom battery and Bassphere™ space-saving design

The front housing had to become dramatically slimmer.
Standard batteries simply wouldn't fit, so the team developed a custom battery module that was longer and thinner.
Traditional oval speakers have rigid edges that limit how compact they can become. To overcome this, the team introduced Shokz's patented Bassphere™ driver: a dual-driver system featuring two high-sensitivity 11.8 mm round speakers that deliver acoustic performance comparable to a 16 mm round speaker.
Its spherical design eliminates sharp corners, reducing pressure points while allowing the centre section to become slimmer and relieve pressure around the tragus — all while delivering rich, powerful bass from an ultra-slim module.
② Dual compensation for acoustics and fit: 30° angle and 14° inward tilt

Extreme miniaturisation introduced another challenge. As the housing became narrower, the sound port moved farther from the ear canal, reducing perceived volume. To overcome this, engineers introduced two carefully tuned geometric angles: a 30° angled speaker module and a 14° inward tilt.
Working together, they improve acoustic alignment while following a shorter path to the ear, increasing transfer efficiency and creating a more natural, comfortable fit.
③ A counterintuitive addition to lightweight design: 0.75 mm Ni-Ti alloy

The team aggressively reduced material throughout the ear hook, replacing an early hollow design that required thicker silicone, reducing the outer hook thickness to 5 mm and shortening the overall length by 2 mm. Yet inside the frame, they took the opposite approach. Instead of using the more common 0.7 mm (or thinner) wire, they upgraded to a 0.75 mm Ni-Ti alloy core.
That extra 10% of material delivers stronger initial clamping force, allowing the ear hook to grip comfortably behind the ear like a spring. Even during intense HIIT sessions, the speaker module stays securely in place. The stronger frame also maintains its durability through tens of thousands of bends.
3. Validation: comfort built on time and data
Every angle and every Ni-Ti parameter had to prove itself on real ears. Because no two ears are exactly alike, the Shokz product team spent 8.5 months validating the design.
Across multiple major iterations and more than 100 rounds of refinement, each testing cycle involved 30 users with different ear shapes completing two- to three-hour high-intensity blind testing sessions. That barely-there feeling isn't accidental. It's supported by thousands of hours of real-world testing data.
4. The finish: solving the impossible triangle of sound, size, and weight

Bassphere™ technology allows the front housing to become smaller without sacrificing sound quality, while the dual-angle geometry improves both fit and acoustic performance.
At the rear, weight was reduced wherever possible while strengthening the Ni-Ti frame for greater stability. Finally, extensive real-world blind testing validated every structural parameter.
The result? The impossible triangle of sound quality, size, and weight — solved.
When the final weight settled at 7.2g per ear, the team didn't simply achieve its 1g reduction target. It created the lightest ear-hook design in Shokz history.
