What is open-ear bone conduction sports headphones, how does it work and how can it make listening to music a safer and more comfortable experience?
Did you know you can hear through your bones AfterShokz creates wireless headphones that utilise bone conduction to make headphones that transmit sound by sending vibrations along your cheekbone, directly to your cochlea where it is processed by the auditory nerve.
Why bone conduction headphones?
As the headphones sit on your cheek bones your ear canal is left open and sound waves bypass the eardrum. The result is a revolutionary way of listening to music which still allows you to hear ambient sounds around you, with no loss of sound quality and no blocking of your ear canals.
And once you’ve heard the sound, you’ll never go back to in-ear headphones…
With bone conduction you’re hearing the same way that you’re able to hear your voice when you plug your own ears.
Don’t believe us?
Try it now. (Note: if you’re on the bus into work you may want to do the following test quietly!)
Just cover your ears and shout out loud. Even by covering your ears you can still hear your voice, right? You are hearing your voice because of the conduction of the vibrations.
5 BENEFITS OF OPEN-EAR BONE CONDUCTION HEADPHONES
1. INCREASED SITUATIONAL AWARENESS
Thanks to the inventor of bone conduction, Beethoven we can now listen to our own soundtrack and the world around us.
Immersing yourself in a new playlist or compelling audiobook is a great escape when walking, running or cycling, but it’s a pleasure that can increase the risk of an accident.
Closing yourself off to the outside world also means you are less likely to hear trains, car horns, bicycle bells and any other warning shouts that you may need to hear. The Audiology Foundation of America has also stated that bone conduction causes less damage to eardrums.
With bone conduction headphones, you can hear another jogger or cyclist approaching behind you and are able to remain in touch with your office environment and hear your colleagues even while listening to your tunes. You’re still connected to your external surroundings even while experiencing your own private sound.

2. MORE COMFORTABLE FIT
Do your current earbud headphones fall out? Do they hurt your ear canals? Are full-size headphones too heavy?
Few things are more annoying than running on a treadmill with your right earbud dangling by the wire because when you start working up a sweat the stupid thing won’t stay in. One big advantage to AfterShokz headphones is that they don’t fall out.
We believe the most comfortable way to enjoy music is with nothing in or over your ears. This open-ear design has helped us to win a global design award.
But, don’t take our word for it... see what our customers have to say:
RussianStuff ★★★★★
Having used these 5 days a week for about 10 hours a day, I must say that they are incredibly comfortable compared to cheaper models. (Air is similar in comfort). I sometimes forget that I'm wearing them until I lay down at night.
Adam Crossley ★★★★★
I can wear it with sunglasses and a hat without discomfort all day long. I wore it skiing under my helmet and also while wearing a balaclava ski mask and it was still perfectly comfortable.
PABLOMAN ★★★★★
After trying earbuds (they weren't comfortable and I always had to keep adjusting them), I went back to my old AfterShokz. They were working great.
3. CLEAN AND HYGIENIC
A recent study of earphones found that earbuds can harbour 119,186 colony-forming bacteria units and this can increase even more if you are sweating! Bacteria just love a warm and wet environment, maybe take a look at how dirty your headphones are! Prepare to be shocked! Open-ear headphones make for an altogether cleaner headphone option.
4. REMAIN CONNECTED WITH THE OUTSIDE WORLD
If you find that music helps fuel your workout, but you still want to chat with your partner, AfterShokz headphones are for you.
The open-ear design of bone conduction headphones means that you can hear everything your friend has to say even whilst listening to your favourite power tune.
We also make bone conduction headsets which means you can take a call while still listening to your colleagues and the workplace around you.
5. A UNIQUE LISTENING EXPERIENCE
Bone conduction headphones provide a unique, double-layered listening experience that’s unlike any other.
It's something you have to hear to believe. It's time to give bone conduction headphones a try?
